Family Fun Project: Made Dad a Rock Figure for Father's Day

For Ages 5+

Celebrate dad this year with a one-of-a-kind rock figure of him or an entire rock family! Dads love homemade gifts from their children and this is a present that will last a lifetime, as well as bring joyous memories to our loving fathers.

Items Needed:
  • Decorative Stone
  • Scissors
  • String or Yarn
  • Glue Gun
  • Craft Glue (Non-Toxic Tacky Glue)
  • Craft Paint (Washable)
  • Paint Brushes
Optional Items:
  • Googly Eyes
  • Other miniature accessories that might represent your dad's interest, like a hat, book, football, gardening tools, ect.
Step 1: Clean Your Rocks
The first step is to clean your rocks to get all the dirt off. Once clean, set them aside for a few minutes so your stones can dry.

Step 2: Choose Your Rocks
Your next step is to select the rocks for your rock figure. Things to keep in mind when selecting your rocks:
  • Try to keep your rocks smaller. Smaller rocks are easier to glue together.
  • Find a sturdy base for your rock figure so it stands or sits.
Step 3: Gluing Your Rocks Together
Once you have chosen your rocks and lined them up the way you would like to glue them, it’s time to grab the glue gun. Plug in your glue gun and wait a few minutes for it to warm up. When warm, start gluing your pieces together.

Caution: Glue guns are very hot and not for all ages. Please talk to an adult if you have never used a glue gun before. Also make sure to read the instructions and safety precautions that come with the glue gun.

Step 4: Painting Your Rock Figurine
After you have glued all your pieces together, let the glue dry while you decide what colors to paint your rock figure. When choosing a color for your rock figure, think if the person has a favorite color, a color they like to wear a lot, or maybe even a favorite sports team. These are good colors to represent your figurine.

Step 5: Final Touches
Now it’s time to add the finishing touches to your rock figure like a mouth, hair, beard, eyes, and/or any additional accessories. Here some tips when attaching your final touches:

  • Hair: Using string or yarn for the hair, cut it to the right length with scissors and use craft glue to attach it on to your rock man/woman.
  • Eyes: Either paint on your eyes or use a craft glue to attach googly eyes.
  • Accessories: For smaller accessories attach them with craft glue and for larger accessories, like a hat, use a glue gun.

Step 6: Happy Father's Day!
Create additional family members or friends for your rock figure or just give dad a rock figurine of himself. This fun and easy project is a creative way to give your dad a memorable gift for Father's Day!
