Planning: Start with a plan before breaking ground for the organic garden. Decide which plants will be in the garden and also where they will be placed. Pick plants that will work best in the climate and hardiness zone.
Preparing Soil: A few weeks before planting the seeds, start preparing the bed. Till up the area to loosen the soil then incorporate about a half inch of compost. Next rake the area to level it out. Make sure that it stays weed free over the next few weeks.
Planting: Some of the plants might be bought already in pots or flats and others will be grown from a seed. Be certain when purchasing plants already in a pot that they were organically grown from the beginning. The best way to ensure this is to start them all by seed. Plant the seeds according to the recommendations on the package. The package will recommend the depth and how far apart.
Watering and Fertilizing: The best time to water is in the morning. Keep the soil moist and do not let it dry out. Once seeds have sprout and begin to mature the frequency of watering can decrease. Fertilize at the time of planting with organic plant food then repeat every six weeks. Follow the directions on the back of the bag.
